Why Meditation Works

Meditation is primarily thought of to be a spiritual practice. But did you know that meditation also has scientifically proven health benefits? There are countless benefits to meditating, and many of these are directly related to your health.

The Science Behind It

There is a definite science behind meditation. Neuroscientists have discovered that people who meditate actually shift their pain activity to various areas of the cortex. For example, pain waves in the stress areas of the pain are moved to the calmer areas of the pain through meditation. As you can probably imagine, shifting these neurons can decrease the negative stress, some mild depression, and anxiety that someone is experiencing. In addition, people who meditate have less amygdale activity, which is the part of the pain where fear is processed.

Health Benefits

It might surprise you to know that yoga and meditation are prescribed as a means of managing life threatening diseases, transforming molecular and genetic structures, reversing mental illness, helping students in accelerated learning programs, and in many more instances. In addition there are countless tangible health benefits to meditating.

Meditation lowers oxygen consumption in the person meditating through a decreased respiratory rate. In turn, this increases blood flow and slows the heart rate. Along the same lines, meditating can lower blood pressure in people who experience high blood pressure. All of this can lead to an increased tolerance for exercise in heart patients, an overall deeper level of relaxation that can actually reduce anxiety attacks by lowering levels of blood lactate, and even physically decrease muscle tension and the pain that comes with them, including headaches. Meditation can increase the serotonin production in the pain and that can lead to a better overall mood in the individual. Low levels of serotonin are linked with depression, obesity, headaches, and insomnia.

If all of these reasons are not enough to meditate, here are some more. Meditation can build an individual’s self confidence. It can help alleviate the symptoms of chronic diseases like arthritis and allergies. Some find that meditating reduces the symptoms of their pre menstrual syndrome. For many people, meditation can help them heal quicker after a surgery. Meditation can enhance the immune system as research has found that meditating increases the activity of so called natural killer cells that attack and kill bacteria and cancer cells. Finally, people who meditate find that they are generally less sick and have less emotional distress than those who do not.
